Selecting a New Church Pew
When you decide to install new pews, you have the opportunity to select every aspect of the design, including end style, body style – Colonial, traditional or contemporary — bookracks, fabrics, finish color, cushions, kneelers and more.
How to Choose Your Church Pews
Select:
Body Style End Style Book Rack Kneeler

(optional) Fabric
(optional)
Before placing any orders, a pew manufacturer should measure the space to determine the area for the new pews. We can come and measure existing pews if it is a replacement project, or use an architect’s drawings. A free floor plan is provided for quotation and project specification prior to a pew order being placed. Upon ordering, a complete set of shop drawings are provided before manufacture of the pews. The shop drawings are fully detailed drawings that show spacing, end details, body, cushion, book racks and other details that can be reviewed, modified and signed off before any production occurs.
All new pew orders include a floor plan and also a full set of shop drawings, to either be integrated with the architect’s drawings or used on their own.
Whatever your selection, you can be confident that your new pews will serve your congregation efficiently and with style for several more generations.

Selecting the Fabric Type for your New Church Pew
Although some pews are all wood, many are manufactured with a combination of cushioned upholstered seats with wood or upholstered backs.
Artech stretches the fabric that is applied to an upholstered pew during manufacturing in both directions: from side to side and from front to back. All fabric edges are folded over before fastening to protect the edge of the fabric from fraying. Rope welting is used to finish each end of the pew for beauty and a longer lasting fabric finish.
The Fiber of the Fabric
When specifying or making a fabric selection for upholstered church pews, you must evaluate the fiber content of the material used to weave the fabric. The fiber content for pew upholstery is very important for determining longevity of the fabric’s life – how well will it wear over time. Be sure to specify a fabric that contains 100% Nylon, 100% Polyester or a combination of these fibers with other synthetic fibers. Fabric combining Nylon and Polyester fibers have demonstrated greater resiliency. This material helps to avoid unsightly ripples or loose fabric over time.
Make sure the fabrics have passed the National Association of Furniture Manufacturers (NAFM) testing for abrasion resistance, tear strength, shrinkage, fading, stretching and color fastness. Plus, check if the fabrics are treated with a Teflon or soil & stain resistant fabric protector.
No Thru-Seat Dividers
Notice in the pictures that there are no through seat dividers. Other manufacturers may install pews in 8 foot lengths causing the pews to have a through seat divider or joint every 8 feet. Artech will only have one butt joint every 22 feet 6 inches.
The Spring Seat (optional)
The spring seat continues to be one of our most popular options when upholstered pews are being considered. Spring seats offer the most comfort of any seating foundation available and will outlast foam padding. The spring creates an arch that moves and follows the body contour, does not bottom out and will provide even greater support than foam padding.

Church Pew Floor Plan Options
See an example of three standard floor plan options below: Straight, Mitered & Curved

- Curved Pews are designed for maximum seating, efficient use of space, and designed to enhance the worship experience.
- Mitered Pews are less custom than Curved Pews, but have improved seating capacity and comfort as compared to traditional straight pews.
- The straight pew is the oldest traditional and most well known style. Although most straight pews are in a line facing the front of the church, Artech can specify a seating arrangement placed inline or designed in a pie-shaped seating configuration, improving the seating capacity and viewing comfort of congregants.
